Remote Monitoring of ER Probes Using a 900MHZ Mesh Network

At Alaska’s North Slope, existing fields span a large geographic area where three phase production fluids can cause severe corrosion. To monitor corrosion and provide feedback for the chemical mitigation program, electrical resistance probes connected to remote data collectors are installed at approximately 80 locations. A wireless remote monitoring unit utilizing a mesh network of 900 MHz spread spectrum radios was developed to collect data from the existing hardware and transmit it to a central location.

Corrosion Inhibitor Screening Using Rapid Response Corrosion Monitoring

The continuous improvement process for corrosion inhibitor development requires an active program of testing new and/or novel chemistries. The original process for field testing prospective corrosion inhibitors required 36 days for each different product and utilized standard electrical resistance probe monitoring to determine inhibitor performance. The new process utilizes enhanced electrical resistance monitoring that allows the same testing to occur in four days, while providing higher quality data The net benefits of the new process include shortened test times, increased number of inhibitors evaluated, reduced test inhibitor volume and an increase in data quality and quantity. These benefits together, have increased the probability of identifying corrosion inhibitors that offer significant cost-performance improvements.

Field Experience with a New High Resolution Programmable Downhole Corrosion Monitoring Tool
Details of a new tool are presented for monitoring real time corrosion in downhole situations. This battery-powered data logging systems generates continuous corrosion history, which is transferred to a PC for analysis. A case study of this Downhole Corrosion Monitoring System (DCMS) is described. The tool is set at any required well depth, and is sensitive enough to show the period of inhibitor film persistency, effectiveness of different treatment chemical and application methods, enabling a realistic economic assessment to be made.
